Formulation Scientist

Duraco is a manufacturer of double-sided tapes and adhesive coated products based in Forest Park, IL.  Duraco is actively expanding its customer and product footprint through organic growth and the acquisition of strategic companies in overlapping and adjacent markets.

 This job description outlines the responsibilities and expectations for the Formulation Scientist supporting current and potential Duraco platform businesses.

 Responsibilities:

  • Conducting in-house formulating of new water-borne and solvent-borne PSAs and coatings for the development of next generation of specialty products
  • Managing multiple NPD projects simultaneously with emphasis on experimental planning, formulation development, formula optimization, adhesives/coatings testing, data-processing, and technical reporting
  • Collaborating with key internal stakeholders across all businesses (Engineering, Operations, Quality, Procurement, Commercial, etc.) to ensure efficient product development and optimization, as well as project execution
  • Engage directly with customers and commercial teams to ensure solid delivery of product development
  • Supporting lab expansion and optimization, overseeing laboratory safety, and managing lab processes and testing equipment
  • Providing technical support on cost-savings initiatives across One Duraco businesses, including alternate adhesives, coatings, and raw materials identification, as well as formulation enhancements for increased throughput and efficiencies
  • Establishing and cultivating relationships with suppliers of key raw materials

 Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science, or related fields
  • Minimum of 5 years of laboratory experiences with water-borne and solvent-borne pressure-sensitive adhesives and/or tactile, barrier and functional coatings
  • Proven new product development track record and lab experience with acrylic and synthetic rubber adhesive formulations, and/or waterborne acrylic and polyurethane dispersion coatings
  • Solid understanding of structure-property relationships between polymer and additive chemistries and formulation performance characteristics
  • Detailed knowledge of additives, formulation processing, applications, and analytical test methods
  • Ability to work independently, generate and share ideas, and develop and execute experimental plans
  • Creative problem-solving ability with excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Demonstrated Project Management skills, including leading projects successfully through feasibility and scale up
  • Strong communication and technical reporting skills
